I decide I have to get up. I am probably crushing her and I need to dispose of the condom. I take care of business and pull some shorts on. I plop on the bed next to her and tug down the sheets that she had pulled up to her chin. She lets me and I wrap her in my arms.
“So…..what inspired you to be a drummer?” She breaks the silence.
“My parent’s love for music did. Music was always in my life. It wouldn’t be unusual to go a week without watching TV at our house, but music was always playing. My parents loved this song by Phil Collins called ‘In the Air Tonight’ and I remember it blaring through the house one evening. I started throwing my hands in the air to the beat of the drums and my dad bought me a drum set shortly after. I played drums by listening to the rhythm of the music and creating my own beat. After my parents realized I wasn’t too shabby, they sent me to lessons to learn to read music.”
“Do you have a favorite drummer?”
“That is a difficult one. I have a couple of drummers that I like. Dave Grohl is kick ass! He used to be the drummer for Nirvana. Then he founded The Foo Fighters as their lead singer. Neil Peart is also another top contender for me. He is the drummer for Rush. John Bonham from Zeppelin, and then there is always Joey Jordison from Slipknot. He is a crazy mother fucker on the drums.”
“You said you were going to teach me how to play sometime. When can I expect to be schooled?” She says to me.
I reach over and grab a set of drum sticks and the remote for my stereo.
“You have to listen to the music. Shut out the world and listen to the rhythm.” She sits up next to me in the bed and this time I let her wrap up in the sheet. She has it wrapped around her chest and tucked in at the top so it doesn’t fall unless someone happens to yank it free. As the song starts I hand her the sticks and lay back. She is in the middle of the bed facing the headboard so I grab a pillow and set it in front of her lap.
“Close your eyes and listen. Hit the pillow when you feel the beat.” I watch her as she starts to respond. She has her eyes closed, but has a small smile on her lips. Her head is bowed almost like she is shy. I crank up the volume to the extreme level that I am used to practicing to and I notice she stops smiling. She starts to move her head to a semblance of the rhythm. I kneel behind her and guide her hands toward the pillow and she starts to express what she is feeling. Her expression is more conservative than mine, but she is definitely hearing the music.
